The performance and workshop was for boarders at St Margaret’s School, aged between 11-18 years, who have recently arrived in England from many different countries including China, Hong Kong, Ukraine, Russia, Spain, Poland and Korea. The aim of the event was to guide the girls through a process of telling and discovering the uniqueness and richness of their own stories and life experiences. It was a great pleasure to see the girls so animated and share stories of their homes, cultures, travels to England and aspirations for the year ahead.
The latest storytelling programme I delivered is called The Curious Girl based on an old Grimms wonder tale about a girl whose curiosity leads her to new and faraway places, and ultimately to discover the value of her own authentic story.

Yesterday my partner and I, Duncan, joined some 40,000 others to demonstrate in London from Temple to Parliament Square. The evening before we had been to see the inspirational new film, Pride, based on the true story when gay and lesbian men and women and the miners supported each other and marched together in solidarity in the 1980s. After the film Duncan told me about his personal experiences during the miners strike collecting food for the miners in Leeds. As we walked to Parliament Square yesterday with the colourful, chanting, placard-holding crowd, we mentioned other demonstrations we had been to when the cause felt immediate and direct, whereas climate change can be much harder to grasp. And perhaps this is all the more reason to find ways to come together and inquire deeply into how we relate to our world; the kind of world we want to live in; and what our own contribution might be. There was a wonderful atmosphere during the demonstration and it felt fantastic to be amongst so many people of all ages declaring our care for this earth that needs our protection and love. |
