I make documentary films in collaboration with Women for Women International. Women for Women International provides women survivors of war, civil strife and other conflicts with the tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency.
Last week I had the privilege of attending the launch of Hand in Hand in Afghanistan at Kate Spade NYC in Covent Garden, London. Hand in Hand is a joint partnership between Women for Women International and the fashion house Kate Spade New York.
Sweeta Noori, the Country Director of Women for Women International’s Afghanistan programme spoke about the situation of women she works with in Afghanistan. She said that domestic violence towards women is rife, women are treated as property, and it is not uncommon for a nine year old girl to be married to a 60 year old man. Sweeta said that women pour petrol on themselves and set their bodies on fire in a desperate attempt to escape their predicament. She spoke about visiting many women who are badly burned in hospitals.
The Hand in Hand programme in Afghanistan supports women to become more independent. Women are trained to produce cashmere scarves and gloves which are then sold at Kate Spade stores and online, and the money goes directly to the women who make the products.
Kate Spade is helping to keep the natural resource of cashmere within Afghanistan (rather than being exported to China), to serve and benefit the local people, particularly women and their families.
