Last night, I told the ancient Buddhist story of Kuan Yin to 12-18 year old students at St Margaret’s Girls School. Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, is the embodiment of understanding and compassion, and there are temples and shrines devoted to her throughout the world today. The storytelling was followed by a workshop that explored questions such as: How can we stop perpetuating a cycle of conflict and violence? What is kindness? What does it mean to be compassionate towards ourselves and others? Through drama and role play, students inquired into the seeds of violence that exist in all of us, and considered creative ways of transforming anger and violence into a force for peace and positive social change.
